Jared Hannigan was fishing from his boat in Dorchester Bay on Monday morning when, to his surprise, he saw a humpback whale. Up close.
“It just sounded like something crashed in the water,” he told the Boston Globe. “I didn’t really understand what it was at first. It was a giant splash.”
Although Hannigan has been fishing for five years, he said this was the first time he had seen a whale in front of his boat.
He described the spectacle as an “absolute explosion in the water, just that force hitting the water all at once,” he told WCVB.
Over ten boaters and fishermen paused to watch the breaching whale, he said.
“I completely forgot I was fishing at that point,” he told the Globe. “It was just having the time of its life out there.”
Monday’s whale sighting is one of several in recent weeks, including a whale capsizing a boat in Rye, New Hampshire and a 2-year-old humpback whale spotting near Logan Airport.
