24 dogs being evacuating to Salem from South Carolina ahead of Tropical Storm Debby
The dogs range in age from 5 months to 3 years old and are expected to arrive in Salem on Wednesday morning.
MSPCA-Angell is asking for the public’s help as it prepares to welcome dozens of animals being evacuated from South Carolina ahead of Tropical Storm Debby’s arrival.
The storm has been causing flooding and tornadoes as it drenches cities while churning up the southeastern coast.
According to the MSPCA, they are expecting 24 dogs ranging in age from 5 months to 3 years old to arrive at the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem from the Charleston Animal Society.
Evacuating the dogs from the Charleston shelter makes room for the South Carolina organization to take in dogs impacted by the storm, Mike Keiley, Vice President of Animal Protection at MSPCA-Angell, said.

Nineteen cats are also being evacuated as part of the transport, according to MSPCA-Angell.
Keiley estimated that caring for the animals will cost about $5,000 and urged that anyone who wants to help can do so by donating to the MSPCA.
MSPCA-Angell will also be hosting an emergency adoptathon, waiving adoption fees for dogs one and older Wednesday through Saturday to help make room for the new arrivals.
“Our capacity for housing dogs was already pretty tight, given the ongoing dog population crisis,” Keiley said in a statement. “We’re tapping into our emergency foster network to help house them, but we really need to find permanent loving homes, and fast.”
