A “tragic accident” where a 4-year-old child fell from a third-floor balcony in Revere on Wednesday prompted Revere Mayor Patrick Keefe to issue a citation for alleged building violations on the property.

“No family should have to live in unsafe housing conditions and Landlords have a responsibility to ensure safety for their tenants,” Keefe said in a statement. “I am praying for the speedy recovery of the child that was injured.”

Keefe said the conditions at 54 Shirley Avenue where the child fell are “unacceptable” and organized the city’s Code Enforcement Task Force, Inspectional Services Department, and regulatory agencies to conduct “thorough inspections” of the entire property, the statement said.

Revere police officers responded to the scene shortly before 2:30 p.m. The child was brought to Massachusetts General Hospital and is currently in “stable condition,” Revere police Captain Amy O’Hara told Boston.com in an email.

“I am grateful to our first responders for their swift actions in providing aid,” Keefe wrote.
