A crash on Route 24 in West Bridgewater killed a MassDOT worker who was working on the highway Saturday night, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office said.

DA Timothy Cruz identified the victim on Sunday as David Sousa, a Stoughton resident. He was 57.

On Saturday around 9:30 p.m., Cruz said, a motorist struck and fatally injured Sousa while he was picking up debris on Route 24 near exit 28B.

The vehicle driver remained on the scene, according to the DA.

Sousa was a former Stoughton Town Select Board member, a social media post from the Stoughton Town Manager said. Chair of the Select Board Stephen Cavey described David “Spanky” Sousa as a dedicated and passionate public servant.

“The passing of former Selectman David ‘Spanky’ Sousa, taken from us far too young, is a profound sorrow that leaves a void in our community and in the hearts of his cherished family,” Cavey said. “His untimely death is a stark reminder of how fragile and precious life can be, and our hearts ache for the family left behind, as they grapple with this profound sadness and the absence of a beloved husband and father.”

Cavey said flags in Stoughton will be flown at half mast to commemorate Sousa’s contributions to the community.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, Cruz said. MassDOT did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
