An Allston man drowned in Walden Pond Wednesday, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

The man, who was 62-years-old, has not been publicly identified.

The DA’s office was notified of the apparent drowning at about 5:30 p.m. The man had been swimming in the pond outside the designated swimming area. He had been seen wearing snorkeling gear.

Other swimmers saw him about 200 feet from the shore, unresponsive. Lifeguards pulled him to the beach and performed CPR. He was brought to Emerson Hospital in Concord, where he later died.

No further information was available Thursday morning.

In 2021, officials responded to a series of drownings across the state by imposing higher fines for those swimming in non-designated areas and by banning open-water swimming at Walden Pond. The pond has a long history as a favorite of open-water swimmers, and the move drew vocal backlash. The ban was lifted not long after it was announced.
