A large tree branch fell on several children attending a day camp at Father Mac’s Playground in Norwood on Thursday, police say.
Four children were sitting on a bench under the tree when the branch weighing “thousands of pounds” fell, Norwood Police Chief Christopher Padden told reporters. Three were brought to local hospitals and one sustained an ankle injury but, Padden said, no one was seriously hurt.
One girl’s foot was pinned under a portion of the tree, and the fire department was called in to lift it. Padden said the others appeared to have minor scratches.
Padden said many of the campers were on a field trip when the branch fell.
“We’re very fortunate that there weren’t more kids because had that branch landed on somebody it would have been a lot worse,” he said.
In response, the Public Works Department will conduct additional trimming and branch removal “beyond their routine maintenance,” according to the Norwood Police.
