A 17-year-old teen from Mashpee died following a single-car crash during the early morning hours in Mashpee on Tuesday, according to Mashpee Police Chief Scott Carline.
At 2:06 a.m., Mashpee Police received a report of a single-vehicle car crash on Carleton Drive at Swain Circle, a side street off Route 28, Carline said in a statement.
Upon arrival, Carline said police found a heavily damaged Rav 4. Initial investigations show that the operator was driving northbound on Carlton Drive when the driver lost control of the vehicle, leaving the roadway and striking a tree.
Responding officers and fire personnel determined that seven people were in the vehicle. All the passengers were between the ages of 15 and 17 and were from Mashpee and Falmouth.
Six of the seven teens were injured, including two who were determined to be in critical condition immediately after the crash, said Mashpee Fire Chief Jack Phelan.
The two teens who were in critical condition were taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital, Phelan said.
The 17-year-old teen died as a result of his injuries sustained in the crash after being transported from the scene to the hospital, Carline said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family at this time,” Carline said.
One teen was taken by ambulance to South Shore Hospital, and the remaining three with low-priority injuries were taken to Falmouth Hospital or Cape Cod Hospital.
The Mashpee Police Department and the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Team are still investigating the crash.
