A Boston police officer had her law enforcement certification suspended and is facing an assault and battery charge after reportedly closing a door on her daughter during an argument.
A suspension order was sent to the officer, Jennifer de los Santos, on June 12. The suspension was handed down by the state Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. It temporarily prohibited her from working as a police officer, and she was ordered to surrender her uniform, badge, and any police-issued firearms.
De los Santos was arraigned in the Dorchester division of Boston Municipal Court on June 3 on one charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, court records show. She pleaded not guilty and was released on personal recognizance.
Boston police did not return a request for comment Thursday.
The POST Commission certifies officers throughout the state and compiles data on police misconduct complaints. If an officer is charged with a felony, the commission is required to suspend their certification.
De los Santos was arrested on June 1. Her daughter told police that she attempted to follow de los Santos into a bedroom during an argument and that de los Santos allegedly closed the door on her, which struck her multiple times, The Boston Globe reported. De los Santos’s daughter went to a nearby fire station on Washington Street to alert authorities.
De los Santos told the officers who responded that she did not intentionally strike her daughter with the door and was attempting to stop her from forcing her way into the room, per the Globe.
