Two people were killed Thursday after a vehicle caught on fire on Route 20 in Weston, authorities said.
A 20-year-old man who was driving the car and his passenger, a 15-year-old girl, were pronounced dead on scene, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said.
Weston police were notified of the crash by an automated 911 call from Apple’s crash detection system. The system, which is available on some iPhones and Apple Watches, detects “severe” car crashes and calls emergency services if the alert isn’t cancelled within 20 seconds, according to Apple.
Officers responded to the alert and found a car engulfed in flames in the woods on the eastbound side of Route 20 in the area of Colpitts Road, the D.A.’s office said.
The fire department extinguished the fire after police were unable to put it out, according to the D.A.’s office.
The D.A.’s office, Weston Police Department, and State Police are investigating the crash.
