City starts process of building affordable housing in Dorchester and Mattapan

Mayor Michelle Wu announced this week that construction will begin on up to 70 new condos in Dorchester and Mattapan.

Affordable housing is coming to Dorchester and Mattapan.

Mayor Michelle Wu announced this week that construction will begin on up to 70 new condos in Dorchester and Mattapan.

This housing plan is intended to create opportunities for home ownership for low and moderate income households in order to begin building generational wealth, according to the annoucement.

“It’s so much more than just matching people with beds or bedrooms or units — it’s a sense of belonging to a community. It’s a sense of identity about what makes you feel like you have everything you need to be stable and also dream about what comes next in your life,” Wu said at a press conference Wednesday about the initiative, according to The Boston Globe.

In the Boston metro area, around 44 percent of white households own their homes, compared to 30 percent of Asian or Pacific Islander households, 17 percent of Hispanic households and 31 percent of Black households, according to the city.

These condos will be available to families below 80% and 100% of the percent of the area median income, or about $118,720 to $148,400 for a four-person family or household.

The companies chosen for the development of the city-owned land parcels were announced as well. These condos will be fully electric, according to a statement on the city’s website.

This housing project, titled Welcome Home, Boston, has four different phases. The first phase was announced in October 2023 when 72 homes were constructed on 12 land parcels in Dorchester.

This second set of development is taking place on land which, according to the city, was determined to be underutilized in a 2022 citywide land audit.

The construction is scheduled to begin on the first set of homes this fall, with the second set of homes scheduled to begin construction in 2025.
