Boston police announce death of active-duty detective

The Boston Police Department announced the recent death of an active-duty detective who served nearly 30 years on the force.

Lt. Det. Henry Staines passed away on Monday, the police department announced on Boston.gov. Staines was appointed to the police department as a student officer in 1996 and was assigned to District C-6 Detectives. In 2020, he was promoted to lieutenant after serving in various roles on the police force.

According to the police department, Staines received numerous commendations for his service throughout his career. His internal commendations centered on arrests, firearms recovery, and drug seizure. The department also acknowledged his role in reducing crime in the community he served.

Following Staines’ passing, the MBTA Transit Police, Randolph Police, and Pittsburg Police sent letters commending him for making arrests after a shooting and a bank robbery and for representing his department at an officer’s funeral.

“Other commendations from the community shared actions that were simple acts of kindness and assistance,” the department wrote in its announcement.

“Lieutenant Detective Staines was highly regarded by those he worked with, his supervisors and all who knew him, both within the Department and by those we serve,” a police spokesperson said. “As you go about your duties, please keep Lieutenant Detective Staines and his family in your thoughts.”
