A Brockton woman and her mother were left with life-threatening injuries after the SUV they were traveling in hydroplaned off Interstate 89 in Vermont Sunday morning, Vermont State Police said.

The driver, 24-year-old Brockton resident Denea France, and her mother, 52-year-old Dawn France, of Flushing, New York, were rushed to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington for treatment, state police said in a statement.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m. near mile marker 93 on I-89 northbound in Colchester. Troopers arrived at the scene to find the mother and daughter unresponsive and severely injured, state police said. Both women were wearing their seatbelts.

Eyewitnesses told troopers the 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio was traveling in the left lane “at an extremely high rate of speed” before the car hydroplaned off the road and struck some trees, according to the statement. The SUV was totaled in the crash, state police said.

Both women remained at UVM Medical Center in critical condition as of Tuesday morning, a hospital spokesperson confirmed.
