A 6-year-old girl who was vacationing with her family in Maine died Wednesday after she was accidentally injured by a broken badminton racket, according to police.
Lucy Morgan suffered an “unintentional injury from her 10-year-old brother” as they played outside a home on North Shore Drive in Limerick on June 1, Maine State Police said. Emergency crews responded to the home at about noon on Saturday.
“Investigators learned that the aluminum shaft of a badminton racquet had become dislodged from the wooden handle, causing the shaft to strike the girl in the head, piercing through her skull,” state police explained.
Morgan was taken to Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford, then airlifted by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to police. The little girl died of her injuries days later.
“The Maine State Police would like to extend their deepest condolences to the Morgan family,” the agency said in a statement.
Morgan’s family is from Stockholm, New Jersey, police said. The girl’s father, Jesse, offered updates on the family’s ordeal through his blog.
“Due to a freak accident with a racquet that broke on a downward swing, a sharp piece had entered Lucy’s skull while she was sitting on the sideline and caused catastrophic injury,” he wrote in an initial post.
Several days later, the pastor shared news of Lucy’s death and reflected on his family’s religious faith in the face of tragedy.
“After significant thorough testing and even more repeated tests to be certain, brain death was declared 1:32am on June 5, and her heart stopped beating around 4am,” Jesse Morgan wrote. “Lucy was with Jesus.”
