Thieves dressed as Amazon workers steal packages in Gardner, police say

The suspects typically bring decoy packages to replace the ones they stole.

Police in Gardner are warning the public about the threat of their packages being stolen by someone impersonating an Amazon delivery driver.

Authorities have recently seen an increase in reports of delivered packages being stolen off of doorsteps. In most of these incidents, expensive items like cell phones have been stolen within minutes of being delivered.

There could be multiple suspects involved, according to Gardner police. They often wear vests with the Amazon logo on them, imitating the uniforms of real delivery workers. The suspects typically carry a box with them up to homes and switch it with the real package.

Gardner police are asking residents to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity and identifying information such as license plate numbers.

Criminals have been engaging in similar activity around the country. In February, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service offered a reward of up to $100,000 for help capturing someone who was impersonating a postal worker in Chicago.

Last month, a man wearing a FedEx shirt stole a package from an apartment building in Manhattan. Police said that the suspect was confronted by a real delivery driver and threatened to stab the worker.
