Mashpee police ask for help finding missing girl who may have been assaulted at school

The 15-year-old has been missing since Sunday.

Police are still on the lookout for a 15-year-old Mashpee teen on Wednesday, who may have been involved in a hazing incident at Mashpee High School, according to law enforcement and social media posts.

Aliyah Konton, an “endangered juvenile,” was last seen on Sunday in the Cape Drive area in Mashpee, according to a Facebook post from the Mashpee Police Department on Monday. Police confirmed Wednesday morning that the search is ongoing.

Mashpee Police Chief Scott Carline, in a separate press release, announced the launch of an investigation into an assault and battery that happened at Mashpee High School between two students.

The police department was first made aware of the assault on Sunday, May 25, and the school resource officer found a social media video circulating of the incident.

The police department is working on the case with the Mashpee Schools Superintendent’s Office and the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office.

“At this point in the investigation, it would be inappropriate for me to comment until the investigation is completed,” Carline said in a statement.

The victim of the assault was not made public by police, but a close friend of the family, Andrea Leonard, told WCVB that she saw the social media video of the incident and identified Konton.

“There was some hitting and they pulled her into the bathroom, and then they forced her to lick the bathroom floor,” Leonard said.

One of Konton’s classmates, Leah Holtz, told WCVB that Konton was new to Mashpee High School.

“She just seems like she was trying to fit in and just trying to make friends with everybody. No student, no person, should ever be harmed in that way,” Holtz said. “I just feel very sick to my stomach because I just want her to be found.”

People on social media have also connected the dots that the missing girl was the victim of the assault.

“The bullies need to be arrested,” one person wrote. “They should face consequences for their actions.”

Another poster said it was awful to find out about the incident on Facebook one week later and not from the school where she has three children.

“The lack of communication and the complete lack of accountability and consequences of perpetrators in the school system is beyond disgraceful,” the mom wrote. “I hope to God she’s found safe and alive and those kids on that video face the consequences of their horrific actions.”

The investigation is ongoing. The Mashpee Police Department urges anyone with information on the incident to contact the Detective Bureau at 508-539-1480.
