Emergency personnel responded to a single-vehicle crash at about 7:15 p.m. Monday on Daniel Shays Highway (Route 202) in Pelham. The driver, a 19-year-old from Essex, had crashed into a tree, and his vehicle had caught fire, local police said.
According to a release, officers, including a nearby State Police trooper, arrived to the 2013 Toyota Siena minivan engulfed in flames and the driver trapped inside. The responders worked to extinguish the fire and used the jaws of life to free the driver from the vehicle.
Police requested a medical helicopter. The 19-year-old was then pronounced dead at a nearby medical facility.
The crash remains under investigation.
