Roll the dice and become the next monopoly owner with the newly minted Cape Cod Monopoly Edition.
The board, unveiled last Thursday, is the official edition from toy makers Hasbro and Top Trumps, which produce special editions of the game of locales worldwide.
“Cape Cod was next on the list for obvious reasons,” said Tim Barney, the regional Monopoly Game Manager from Top Trumps. “There are a lot of beautiful, wonderful things on the Cape. A lot of great attractions, businesses, organizations, nonprofits, and we wanted to capture all of that and the spirit of Cape Cod with the game.”
Cape Cod 5 is the banker collecting income and luxury taxes. Transportation hubs include Route 6A, the ferry, Cape Cod Flyer, and Cape Air. Businesses such as Agway of Cape Cod, Truro Vineyards, and Shepley Wood Products are all up for grabs. Cape Cod Healthcare, Chatham Bars Inn, and Heritage Museum & Gardens are also included.
The making of the board game began about a year ago. It starts with nominations, in which the company asks the public for opinions and recommendations on what should be in the game.
“That way, it’s very much made by and for the people,” said Barney.
Then, the company holds an interview process to vet the business’s credibility and see if there is a level of community engagement. Top Trumps also wants to see if there is longevity because they want it to last as long as the board game.
Based on the information gathered, Top Trumps entered agreements with the businesses, nonprofits, and sports teams involved.
Top Trumps paired up with the local nonprofit Love Live Local, which advocates for consumers to shop locally. The nonprofit helped brainstorm ideas and ensure no iconic sites, such as the Bourne Bridge, were missed.
“They want it to feel as authentic as possible,” said Amanda Converse, the executive director of Love Live Local. “They reached out to the local community and came up here and toured the whole place.”
It’s not only the board that has local sites; the Chance and Community cards do as well.
Love Live Local has its Community Chest card: “You shifted your spending to small businesses, which has proven contributes to a stronger economy!”
Converse believes the boards will sell this summer.
“What’s so great about it is that locals will love it,” said Converse. “Year-rounders will love it because it’s very specific to our home, and they will see all the landmarks they love. Every second homeowner will want it when they come in season or share it with house guests.”
She adds that it would also be a good fit for rental properties. Converse says the game is a fun way to see all the landmarks a visitor wouldn’t want to miss.
She admires how it showcases the Cape Cod Baseball League, local nonprofits, and community organizations.
Customers can find the board at local shops throughout the Cape and online at the Top Trumps website for $44.99.
“It made for a beautiful addition,” said Barney. “We knew it was going to be awesome. I hate that we didn’t do it sooner.”
