Boston police announce death of active-duty officer

Bernard Doyle was “highly regarded” by his colleagues, the department said.

The Boston Police Department announced the death of an active duty officer who has been with the department for close to four decades.

Officer Bernard Doyle died on Friday, Boston police said in a statement released Tuesday.

Doyle was a second generation officer who started working as a cadet at the department in 1987. He was appointed to the police academy as a recruit in 1993, the department said.

He was first a probationary officer in Mattapan and Dorchester, then continued as a permanent officer there for eight years, according to the statement. He went on to work in Hyde Park and Roslindale.

Doyle received multiple recognitions throughout his time with the department, including one by the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force.

“Officer Doyle was highly regarded by those he worked with, his supervisors and all who knew him, both within the Department and by those he served,” the statement reads.
