Car crashes into multiple houses in Clinton, causing gas leak, evacuation of nearby residents

A 22-year-old man was arrested after allegedly crashing a car into several houses in Clinton Sunday morning, causing electrical outages and a gas leak that led to residents being evacuated. 

The incident happened at about 7 a.m. Sunday in the area of 980 to 990 Main St., the Clinton Police Department said in a statement on Facebook. Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting the crash, and the police and fire departments responded to the scene, the statement said. 

The man’s car crashed into three houses, a telephone pole, and a parked vehicle, causing “heavy damage,” police said. The crash caused electrical outages and a “large” gas leak.

Main Street was closed and residents were evacuated from nearby homes because of the gas leak, according to police. 

The driver, who was arrested on scene, was reportedly “assaultive and uncooperative” with officers, police said in the Facebook post. He will be charged with unlicensed operation, operating under the influence, destruction of property, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer, among other charges. 

“As the investigation continues additional charges may be included,” police said. 

Eight departments and agencies worked on the incident, including National Grid Gas and Electric, the Clinton Building Inspector, Clinton Animal Control, and the Clinton Department of Public Works.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said.
