Malden police shot armed man during altercation, department says

Police had an “altercation” with the man before an officer shot him, according to the Malden Police Department.

Police shot a man in Malden Wednesday morning after he brandished a knife and refused to comply with orders, officials said.

The man, 31-year-old Dominique Matthew Long of Malden, allegedly assaulted and robbed a 43-year-old woman before police arrived on scene, the Middlesex District Attorney’s office said in a statement.

Malden police received multiple 911 calls for a disturbance in the area of 260 Eastern Ave. at about 9:15 a.m., the DA’s office said. The woman and a witness to the incident said Long had a knife.

Responding officers “verbally engaged” with Long, who refused to comply with orders to put down the items he was carrying, officials said.

“The suspect then dropped his possessions, pulled a kitchen style knife from his pants pocket and advanced on one of the responding officers,” the DA’s office said. “Police deployed less-than-lethal Tasers, that were ineffective.”

An officer then fired their gun, shooting Long.

Long was responsive on scene and transported to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

A police officer and the victim were taken to a hospital and have both been released, according to the DA’s office.

A preliminary investigation showed the victim was walking in the area of Eastern Avenue when Long “threw a cup” at her and punched her in the head, officials said.

The woman tried to record Long, but he allegedly took her iPad and took out the knife.

Long then walked down the street and allegedly threatened a witness with the knife, the DA’s office said.

Long is charged with armed robbery, assault and battery, three counts of assault with dangerous weapon, and intimidation with a witness. He will be arraigned when he is medically cleared, officials said.

“There is no threat to public safety at this time as all persons involved in this incident remained on scene,” Malden police said.

State Police, the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, and Malden Police Department are continuing to investigate the incident.
