A 74-year-old Jamaica Plain man was rescued Sunday after he fell while hiking near Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said conservation officers responded to the report of the injured hiker around 8:20 p.m. The department said the man was descending the Spellman Trail at Monadnock State Park when he fell about 15 feet, suffering upper body injuries that prevented him from continuing the hike on his own. His hiking partner contacted authorities for help.
Conservation officers were able to reach the hikers around 10:15 p.m and provided first aid before helping the injured man down the mountain, according to the fish and game department.
“The hikers began their hike at 11:30 a.m. and were not prepared for an unexpected stay on the mountain while waiting for rescuers, and were provided water, warm clothing, and headlamps,” officials said.
The hikers reached their vehicle around 1:40 a.m. and returned home to Massachusetts, according to the department.
“This incident is a good reminder to all people recreating in the outdoors to dress appropriately, hike with a partner or group, and carry the necessary equipment,” the N.H. officials said. “Always plan for the unexpected.”
