Marshfield High School, Furnace Brook Middle School, and Martinson Elementary School are all located in one complex off of Plain Street. Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Granatino said the altercation took place about a half mile away.

The schools sheltered in place for about 25 minutes “out of an abundance of caution,” Granatino said, a process where the buildings are locked but teachers are still able to hold class.

At Martinson Elementary School, students were still arriving at school, Granatino said. Marshfield police officers assisted in the drop off at the elementary school during the shelter in place order.

“We thank our students, staff and families for their patience and cooperation,” Granatino wrote to families. “We also want to thank the MPD for doing a tremendous job during a challenging time.”

Marshfield police still looking for weapon

Police received multiple reports of the altercation near a school bus stop on Plain Street. Two callers to 911 said that a gun was present during the fight, police said.

Marshfield police said they’re working with Massachusetts State Police, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department, and the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council to search for the weapon. As of 3 p.m., the search was ongoing.

“Dogs specifically trained to detect firearms have been utilized and grid searches of the area and the complex are ongoing,” Marshfield police said.
