A New Bedford woman died after she was struck by a car on Interstate 195 in Westport Monday night.
Sherry M. Henderson, 51, was found by first responders with “obvious” fatal injuries, according to State Police.
A 21-year-old woman was driving a 2010 Ford Fusion eastbound on I-195 with another passenger from Fall River toward New Bedford. Near the 15.8 mile marker in Westport, while driving in the right lane, she suddenly saw the vehicle in front of her move over to the middle lane. The Fusion then hit Henderson, who was on foot, according to police. The driver of the Fusion immediately pulled over and called 911.
State Police troopers, firefighters, and EMS responded just after 10 p.m. Two other drivers who witnessed the crash told police that Henderson ran out into the roadway, which caused one car to swerve out of the way before the Fusion struck her. The woman driving the Fusion showed no signs of impairment and stayed at the scene, police said.
Authorities learned that Henderson had been riding in a car on I-195 east with her boyfriend. The two got into an argument, and the boyfriend pulled over to the side of the road. Henderson got out of the car. She entered the right lane and was hit by the Fusion, police said.
Her boyfriend drove away some time before first responders arrived. He later called New Bedford police while troopers were still on scene at the crash site to report that Henderson had been struck on the highway, officials said. State Police interviewed him afterward.
A GoFundMe page was created Tuesday by one of Henderson’s sisters to fund funeral expenses. The creator of the fundraiser, Nikeia Orellana, wrote that Henderson died in a “tragic accident.”
“Sherry was a kind hearted loving caring person. She would take her shirt off her back to give to you if you needed it. Unfortunately she does not have a life insurance policy and her tragic death was unexpected,” Orellana wrote. “We want to be able to give Sherry the proper burial she deserves any little donation will help please and thank you in advance.”
An investigation remains ongoing, and no criminal charges have been filed.
