MBTA Police: 80-year-old driver ignored warnings before collision with commuter rail train in Beverly

Roads were closed and some MBTA commuter rail passengers experienced "severe delays" Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

A car was hit by an MBTA commuter rail train in Beverly Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

An 80-year-old driver reportedly ignored the “flashing lights” and “audible alarm” of an incoming commuter rail train and drove around the crossing gate before being struck by the train, MBTA Transit Police said Wednesday evening.

The crash occurred at the Hale Street Crossing, according to MBTA police.

The driver was transported to a hospital with unspecified injuries.

Photos of the scene provided by police showed a red car with heavy damage to its front.

The Beverly Police Department said at around 4 p.m. Wednesday that Hale Street would be closed inbound from the intersection of Hale Street and Haskett Street and outbound from the intersection of Hale Street and Thissell Street until further notice.

The MBTA said at about 4 p.m. that passengers may experience “severe delays” in both directions due to police activity in Beverly and about an hour later that Rockport Line Train 116 had been canceled.
