17-year-old facing charges after baby dies in Rhode Island

The 17-year-old boy was arraigned Friday on one count of child endangerment and held at a juvenile corrections facility.

A 17-year-old is facing charges after a 2-month-old baby was found unresponsive and later died in Newport, R.I. last week, police said.

Newport police responded to the Festival Field Housing Development on Girard Avenue just before 11 p.m. Thursday night.

Police said first responders performed live-saving measures before transporting the child to Newport Hospital. The 2-month-old boy died there, Newport police said. The child’s cause of death was not released.

Police announced Friday morning that the 17-year-old teen would face felony charges relating to the child’s death.

An unruly crowd also formed at the scene, and a physical altercation broke out, police said. Newport police intervened, and one officer was punched in the face, they said. No one was arrested at the scene.
