Driver dead, investigation underway after truck crashes into Devens behavioral health center

The circumstances around the crash remain under investigation.

Authorities are investigating after a truck crashed into a behavioral health center in Devens early Wednesday, resulting in the death of the driver.

The truck crashed into the front of a building at 85 Patton Road, the address for TaraVista Behavioral Health Center, just after 5:30 a.m., according to the Worcester County District Attorney’s office. When first responders arrived at the scene, the truck was on fire.

When the blaze was extinguished, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was found dead, the DA’s office said. No one in the building was injured.

In a statement to WCVB, TaraVista chief executive officer Francis Sauvageau said the truck crashed into the center’s hospital facility where the administrative offices are located.

“All patients and all staff are accounted for and unharmed, and at no time were in danger,” he said. “TaraVista remains structurally sound, and we continue to treat the patients that have been entrusted to our care,”

The hospital was at full capacity with 117 patients at the time of the crash, Sauvageau said.

According to its website, TaraVista is a psychiatric hospital providing acute care to children, adolescents, and adults largely from Worcester and Middlesex counties, as well as from across the state and southern New Hampshire.

The DA’s office said the circumstances around the crash remain under investigation.
