An investigation stemming from allegations raised last year determined that Stoneham Police Sgt. Thomas Heller used “vulgar and racially insensitive language” while on duty, officials said.
A private investigator was hired for this process, which began in spring of 2023. In a written press release, Stoneham Town Administrator Dennis Sheehan and Stoneham Police Chief James O’Connor said Heller was found to have lied throughout the investigation.
When the evidence was corroborated, Heller was placed on administrative leave throughout the disciplinary process, they said. It was determined that Heller violated various policies and rules in his use of vulgar and racist language.
Because he was facing termination, Heller resigned on his own and entered a separate agreement with the Town of Stoneham detailing the terms of his separation, according to the statement.
“Heller did not receive any additional compensation or wages beyond what was owed to him under his collective bargaining agreement and the law,” they said.
According to officials, “There is no place for hateful language among the members of the Stoneham Police Department.”
