A driver is facing charges relating to an alleged hit-and-run in Beverly where police say he struck a woman in the street after she had just been hit by another vehicle.
47-year-old Diego Mattos-Vazualdo, of Essex, was charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He pleaded not guilty to both charges in court Monday.
Police said they responded to the incident around 10:15 p.m. Sunday night on Rantoul Street in Beverly. They found a woman with serious injuries who was then transported through a MedFlight to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Police said that according to their preliminary investigation, the woman was hit by the first vehicle after she walked into the street. The driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with officials. Then, she was allegedly hit by the vehicle driven by Mattos-Vazualdo.
Mattos-Vazualdo stopped his vehicle for a few seconds but then continued driving, police allege. With a description of his vehicle, officers were able to pull him over and detain him. He told officers he “may have struck something,” police said.
Beverly police said there was no update on the woman’s condition as of Monday evening.
