The school resource officer who authorities say unintentionally discharged his firearm inside a bathroom at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School on Tuesday afternoon has been reassigned as the investigation into the incident continues, officials said.
Cambridge police said that Officer Frank Greenidge was in a single-stall staff bathroom at the high school when he removed his gun from its holster and “it unintentionally discharged.”
No one was injured and the school day was not interrupted, according to the department.
“Officer Greenidge promptly reported the incident to his supervisor allowing the police department to quickly respond and process the scene,” police said. “The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police were also notified in connection with this incident.”
Greenidge, who had been working as a Youth Resource Officer at Rindge, has been reassigned within the Cambridge Police Department pending the completion of the review and investigation into the incident, police said.
“The Cambridge Police Department has strict policies regarding the use, maintenance, and storage of all department issued firearms,” police said. “The department is investigating whether there was a violation of those policies.”
According to the department, Greenidge has been a member of Cambridge police since 1987.
“He is a highly regarded member of the school community for his work in the school district and youth sports programs,” the department said.
Police said the findings will be released to the public upon completion of the investigation.
