Two men are facing charges in connection with the alleged assault of a truck driver Monday afternoon on I-495 in what police say was a road rage incident.
Troopers responded to the report of the altercation in the breakdown lane of I-495 south in Bolton just before 2 p.m., State Police said. The initial investigation indicates that the driver of a tractor trailer was assaulted by two men who were driving a Volkswagen hatchback, they said.
During the alleged altercation, the truck driver was struck with a hammer, suffering serious injuries, police said. He was taken to Leominster Hospital, where he remains.
Police said the two men involved fled the scene before troopers arrived and a BOLO was issued for the vehicle and men. The suspects were stopped in Marlborough and taken into custody, police said. One of the men was treated at Marlborough Hospital for injuries sustained in the alleged altercation.
A third occupant in their vehicle, a woman, was not charged.
Police said the charges against the two men are still being finalized and additional information on the incident will be released Tuesday.
