Emmanuel College is taking preventative measures after one of its students was hospitalized with meningitis, according to local reports.

The college sent out a notice about the hospitalization to the community Wednesday, NBC Boston reported. A spokesperson confirmed that a student had the infection but declined to share the notice sent to the community.

“In accordance with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health protocols, the College is taking timely actions to ensure that no additional cases of meningitis develop on or beyond our campus,” the school said in a statement sent to Boston.com.

Meningitis occurs when there is swelling of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, according to the CDC. The contagious infection can be deadly and is most common in teenagers or young adults living in community settings like dorms.

State guidelines for preventing the spread of infection include frequent handwashing and not sharing food, drinks, or eating utensils with others.

State law also requires high school and college-aged students to receive a meningitis vaccine.

“We send our best wishes for a rapid recovery to the affected student,” the college said in its statement.
