A Dorchester man accused of shooting a Boston Police officer was arraigned Tuesday in Dorchester District Court on 12 charges stemming from the incident.

Avery Lewis, 31, was arrested just after 9:30 p.m. on Monday night after allegedly shooting a BPD officer who was wearing a bulletproof vest.

He faces charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device, armed assault to murder, assault and battery with a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, and trafficking cocaine.

Lewis pleaded not guilty on all the charges and was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for later this month, according to court documents.

Prosecutors said in court Tuesday that officers were called to the scene by a woman who said that Lewis was outside with a gun. Lewis tried to flee, and a gun went off as he was being placed in custody, WCVB reported.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said Monday that the officer who was shot had been on the force for less than two years. That officer has not been publicly identified. Cox said he was “doing well,” and called him “heroic.”

“Tonight is yet another reminder of all that our officers and their families put on the line to serve our city,” Mayor Michelle Wu said Monday.

Lewis has a history with law enforcement. In 2017, he was arrested for allegedly distributing drugs near a school. In 2009, Lewis was charged with armed robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to court documents.
