Man dies, another adult injured after Lowell house fire

No working smoke alarms were found at the scene of the fire, officials said.

A man died and another adult was injured in a house fire in Lowell Saturday night, officials said.

The Lowell Fire Department responded to 114 Farmland Road at about 10: 50 p.m. following multiple 911 calls, the State Fire Marshal’s office said in a statement Sunday.

Upon arrival, responders found heavy smoke coming from the back of the building and were notified someone was still inside, according to the statement.

“Firefighters immediately made entry and attacked the fire, encountering heavy smoke and intense heat inside,” the statement stated. “They pushed upward to the second floor, where they located the victim.”

The fire was put out in about 20 minutes and didn’t spread to nearby buildings. The victim, a man who has not been identified, was pronounced dead on scene, according to officials.

“On behalf of the Lowell Fire Department, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the man’s family and loved ones,” said Lowell Fire Chief Phillip A.J. Charron in a statement. “This is a sad day for them and our community.”

A second occupant escaped the house with non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, officials said.

Preliminary investigation shows the fire began in a bedroom near the back left corner of the second floor, the State Fire Marshal’s office said. There were no working smoke alarms found in the house, officials said.

“A fire at home can become deadly in three minutes or less,” said State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine in a statement. “Please take a moment to be sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home. They’re your family’s first line of defense against a fire, especially in the overnight hours when fires are most likely to become deadly.”

The fire is being investigated by the Lowell Fire Department, Lowell Police Department, and State Police. The exact cause is unknown but foul play is not suspected, officials said.
