A feline mom and her litter of kittens were rescued recently from an unnamed restaurant ceiling in New Bedford, according to a statement from the Animal Rescue League of Boston.
The restaurant staff and a local cat feeder noted that the mom cat had been seen previously in the area, according to the statement.
However, when the staff began to hear kittens mewing in the ceiling, they contacted the animal rescue.
ARL Field Services arrived to find a space between the walls and a hole in the ceiling, according to the rescue. One field services agent, while being spotted by another, was able to reach into the space for the four kittens.
However, according to the statement, when attempts were made to catch the mother cat with food and kitten sounds, she would not come close enough to be trapped.
A humane trap was placed in the ceiling space, according to the rescue, while the kittens were taken to ARL’s Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center for care.
The mom cat went into the trap around 11 p.m. and was picked up by ARL the next day.
The three-week-old kittens are being weened from their mother and will be up for adoption soon, according to the league.
“Community cats are incredibly resilient, and have a knack to find shelter for themselves and their offspring,” the organization said in the statement. “However, kittens born this time of year are incredibly vulnerable to the elements and other potential dangers and ARL urges the public that if a cat with offspring are discovered, to contact ARL Field Services for assistance.”
ARL Field Services can be reached by calling 617-426-9170 ext. 563.
