A construction crane collapsed at a Norwood condominium complex Friday afternoon, crushing part of its roof and damaging at least two units.
According to the Norwood Fire Department, the crane collapsed around 12:37 p.m. at the Nassau Gardens complex on Bahama Drive. The crane was being used for a roofing project when it collapsed and came to a rest on top of the building. One resident was reportedly home when the crane damaged their unit.
No injuries were reported, but residents had to evacuate the building. An investigation into the cause of the collapse is underway. The incident prompted a heavy emergency response with several fire trucks. Crews were still working on the crane’s removal hours after it fell.
“It is not known if the building will be tenable once removed but the building and wiring inspectors have been called to the scene,” a Norwood Fire Department spokesperson said on Facebook.
Photos shared by the fire department showed the vehicle’s entire driver’s side elevated off the ground with the crane resting on the damaged roof.
A resident who was home when the collapse happened told Boston 25 that the crash sounded and felt like a “giant earthquake.”
Norwood Chief of Police William Brooks said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified.
