A young boy from Hopedale died after a crash in Maine that also left his father and brother with life-threatening injuries, according to the Rumford, Maine Police Department. The boy’s name has not been released.
Rumford Police suspect that alcohol was a “contributing factor in the crash,” but did not indicate which driver in the two-car crash might have been drinking.
Just before 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, a 911 caller reported a “high-speed” collision near 1125 Route 2 in Rumford. The operators were told that multiple people were trapped, and that airbags went off.
While emergency crews were responding, a game warden and a nurse that happened to be in the area ran up to the cars. They found an unresponsive 8-year-old boy and attempted life-saving measures.
Four people were involved in the crash. A Hopedale man was traveling with his two sons, the 8-year-old and a 5-year-old, in a 2016 Subaru Impreza. A Rumford man was traveling alone in a 2005 Volvo. First responders quickly realized that all four sustained critical injuries. They were transported to Rumford Hospital, police said.
The 8-year-old was pronounced dead after life-saving measures failed at the hospital, police said. The 5-year-old was later moved to a Portland hospital for “further emergency treatment.” Their father was transported to a hospital in Lewiston.
The man and his children were traveling eastbound on Route 2 and the other driver was traveling westbound at the time of the crash, police said.
Authorities shut down Route 2 as they investigated. It was reopened by about 6:20 p.m.
