A former Stoughton Water Department employee allegedly tampered with the drinking water in 2022 and lied about it to investigators, officials announced.

A grand jury indicted 58-year-old Robert Bullock of Brockton on two counts of making false statements and one count of tampering with the water system, the Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Joshua Levy said Thursday.

Bullock allegedly went into one of the Water Department’s pumping stations the night of Nov. 29, 2022 and turned off the pump that puts chlorine into the drinking water. The U.S. attorney said Bullock’s alleged actions introduced insufficiently disinfected water into Stoughton’s water system.

He also allegedly made false statements to federal investigators about the tampering of the water system.

Bullock faces up to five years in prison, two years of supervised release, and a fine $250,000 for allegedly making false statements, and for the water tampering charge he faces 20 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.

It is unclear why he would allegedly tamper with Stoughton’s water.
