Dorchester school evacuated, staff member hospitalized after boiler malfunction

Students and staff at UP Academy in Dorchester were cleared to come back into the building after about 30 minutes, school officials said.

A school in Dorchester was evacuated and a staff member was hospitalized Wednesday morning after a boiler malfunction, a Boston Public Schools spokesperson said.

Students and staff were evacuated from UP Academy in Dorchester Wednesday morning “out of an abundance of caution because of an odor,” the school’s principal Ariella Silverstein-Tapp wrote in a letter to families.

Boston EMS transported a school staff member to a local hospital and evaluated a “number” of students, according to the letter.

“No students were taken to the hospital, and their families have been notified,” Silverstein-Tapp wrote in the letter.
