A school in Dorchester was evacuated and a staff member was hospitalized Wednesday morning after a boiler malfunction, a Boston Public Schools spokesperson said.
Students and staff were evacuated from UP Academy in Dorchester Wednesday morning “out of an abundance of caution because of an odor,” the school’s principal Ariella Silverstein-Tapp wrote in a letter to families.
Boston EMS transported a school staff member to a local hospital and evaluated a “number” of students, according to the letter.
“No students were taken to the hospital, and their families have been notified,” Silverstein-Tapp wrote in the letter.
The Boston Fire Department responded to the school and determined there was an issue with the boiler. Students and staff returned to the building after about 30 minutes, the letter said.
UP Academy serves K-8 students and has an enrollment of approximately 720, according to its website.
