Utility companies in Massachusetts say they are making preparations ahead of a storm that is forecast to bring strong to damaging winds and widespread rain to southern New England on Wednesday.
The National Weather Service is forecasting that soaking rains and strong wind gusts will arrive overnight and into Wednesday evening. According to the service, the potentially damaging winds will develop first near the coast during the day and then expand across the rest of the region Wednesday night.
Winds could reach higher than 50 mph in some areas, according to forecasters.
Strong to damaging winds anticipated across southern New England Wed through Wed Night with widespread rain. Still breezy on Thu, but dry & much cooler.

National Grid said it is closely watching the forecast and has crews in place to respond as needed to any potential impacts.

Eversource said it is also bringing in additional crews.
“With strong winds expected tomorrow afternoon, we’re getting materials ready and bringing in additional contract crews to respond to any damage as quickly as safety allows,” Eversource wrote to customers on Tuesday afternoon. “Keep our contacts handy and follow our storm tips so that you’re prepared, too.”

A text to customers from the company touching on preparations for the winds included a typo that both Eversource and the public seized on. The company inadvertently wrote, “We are a storm.”
“While working quickly to inform our customers about tomorrow’s storm, we accidentally omitted a word in our text message,” the company wrote. “We’re not literally a storm, but we have been using all our power to prepare and you can look to us for updates.”
