The Outlets at Kittery will be demolished to clear space for hotel, housing

The town approved the proposal last week.

One of the outlet malls in Kittery, Maine, is slated for demolition in order to make room for a three-phase project that will include the construction of a hotel, restaurant, and housing.

The plans, which were approved by Kittery’s planning board last week, include the development of a 119-room hotel, 107 new apartments, and a restaurant on the site of the Outlets at Kittery plaza, near the Kittery Trading Post on Route 1, Maine Public Radio reports. The construction of the hotel will mark the first phase of the project.

Dutch Dunkleberger, chair of the town’s planning board, said the town had been exploring potential redevelopment opportunities for the site for several years, according to Maine Public Radio.

“What do you do with all that space? We started noticing some vacancies and thought about how can we make use of that?” he reportedly said. “We have, in the past, approached the various owners about the potential for developing it into a mixed use space.”

According to the station, 11 of the apartments constructed as part of the second phase of the project will be affordable units.
