A kayaker’s body was discovered off the shore of Barrington Town Beach in Rhode Island Sunday night after officials used a phone ping to locate the victim.
At 5:13 p.m. Sunday, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) received a 911 call about a missing kayaker who had left from Conimcut Point in Warwick, R.I., a spokesperson for DEM said in a statement to Boston.com.
A kayak belonging to the victim, who was 60 years old, was located partly submerged about 30 feet off Barrington Town Beach at 6:43 p.m., according to the statement. The kayaker, who was determined to be deceased, was found at about 9:30 p.m. about five feet from the shore.
“A family member of the victim called the victim’s phone using a find-your-phone app and first responders were able to coordinate the ping from that call to the exact location where the victim was found,” the DEM spokesperson said.
The victim was wearing a life jacket but also “heavy clothes,” according to the statement. Weather conditions were “breezy” Sunday night and the water was choppy between Conimcut and Rumstrick Point in Barrington, officials said. Water temperatures were in the high 30s to low 40s.
The victim has not been publicly identified.
