Officials are investigating the cause of an early morning house fire in Sudbury Wednesday that left one resident dead and injured another.
The Sudbury Fire Department responded shortly after 5 a.m. to Goodman’s Hill Road for a 911 call reporting a structure fire, Fire Chief John Whalen said during a press conference. Upon arrival, firefighters found a “significant amount of fire showing from the rear” of the single family home. They were eventually able to suppress the blaze to the point where they could enter and search the first floor.
During the search, they found a resident of the home, dead in a living space, Whalen said.
The three other people in the home had gotten out of the house by the time first responders arrived.
Whalen said the response to the fire was made challenging by the property being about 1,000 feet off the road, requiring firefighters to lay a 900-foot supply line to battle the blaze.
Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix said during the press conference that one of his officers was the first to arrive at the scene and the three residents told him there was a fourth person still inside.
“He made it into the structure but was unable to gain access to the deceased, unfortunately,” Nix said.
The Sudbury officer was transported to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment for smoke inhalation, according to officials.
Nix called the actions of the officer, a “relatively new” member of the department, “heroic.”
“He did a great job in incredibly difficult circumstances by himself, trying to listen to the information provided by those on site and make every effort that he could,” he said.
One of the residents who escaped the home was also taken to a local hospital for medical treatment; the two others were transported for evaluation, according to the State Fire Marshal’s office.
The cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation by the Sudbury Fire Department, Sudbury police, state police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, and the Fire District 14 investigator.
