Four people, including two children, fell through the ice at Lake Memphremagog in Newport, VT, on Saturday while riding a side-by-side vehicle, leaving a 3-year-old boy in critical condition.

The Newport Police Department responded to the South Bay of Lake Memphremagog at approximately 5 p.m. Saturday for reports of a vehicle that had fallen through the ice and “plunged four victims… into the water,” police said in a statement

All four victims had made it out of the water by the time officers arrived and informed police that the vehicle — a 2019 Honda Pioneer 1000 — had sunk to the bottom of the lake.

“Three people ran toward officers while pulling a black sled, in which a man was administering chest compressions to a 3-year-old child who had fallen through the ice,” the statement read.

Officers reportedly told the man to keep doing chest compressions on the child while officers pulled the sled to the shore. The child was then transferred to EMS and taken to North Country Hospital.

Officers assisted the other victims, who “all appeared to be in a state of exhaustion/hypothermia,” police said.

The 3-year-old remained in critical condition at the hospital Tuesday, Newport Police Chief Travis Bingham said in a statement. The other three occupants were treated Saturday for “minor injuries” and released the same day, according to Bingham.

Newport Ambulance Service and Newport City Fire Department responded to the scene. The other victims were driven to North County Hospital by bystanders and were escorted by a Newport officer, officials said.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said.
