A Somerville woman was carried to safety Saturday after suffering a “serious lower leg injury” during a hike on New Hampshire’s Welch Mountain, officials said.
Elisabeth Campbell, 26, was heading down the mountain when she injured her leg, preventing her from finishing her hike, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game. Rescuers reached Campbell at 2:35 p.m., about two hours after they received the call for help, officials explained in a press release.
Campbell was located about 1.3 miles from the trailhead, and rescue crews used a litter to carry her down the mountain, “at times belay[ing] the litter with rope on steep, icy portions of the trail,” New Hampshire Fish and Game said.
The team reached the trailhead at 4:35 p.m., and officials said Campbell’s hiking companion brought her to Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth, New Hampshire, for further care.
“Elisabeth and her hiking partner were well-prepared for a winter hike and were wearing micro-spike traction devices,” New Hampshire Fish and Game said. “Conservation Officers want to remind people taking to the outdoors this winter to constantly be assessing the conditions and be prepared for unforeseen complications.”
New Hampshire officials also launched another rescue mission in the White Mountains Saturday following a disastrous hike marked by “poor choices” and a distinct lack of preparedness.
In that rescue, a 22-year-old New Hampshire man was treated for hypothermia and frostbite after setting out for a hike on Mount Washington without proper gear, equipment, weather planning, or “proper critical decisions” to keep himself out of harm’s way during dangerous winter conditions that included high winds and temperatures as low as -52 degrees, New Hampshire Fish and Game said.
