Trains on three MBTA subway lines ground to a halt Thursday morning as a power outage struck the T’s signal system and several stations, causing widespread delays just in time for the morning commute.
The T first reported the issue in a 6:32 a.m. post on X, formerly known as Twitter. Soon after, the agency said service on the Green, Blue, and Orange lines was standing by as crews worked to move trains into stations.
Trains were able to continue service, but in an update around 9 a.m., the T noted all three lines are experiencing “significant delays.” In a statement at that time, the T said it expected to restore service by 10 a.m., as its crews were “working urgently” to bring all infrastructure back online.

“The outage at North Station was unexpected, and it is one of the MBTA’s primary power feeds,” the T said. “As a safety precaution, protective systems opened related circuit breakers, temporarily discontinuing power flow. We apologize for the inconvenience and disruption during the morning commute.”
Emergency lighting remained active at stations, and the T temporarily relied on manual dispatch on the three impacted lines. The T also offered alternative routes for passengers on the Blue and Orange lines, suggesting the SL3 bus and commuter rail, respectively.
Around 9:20 a.m., the T announced that power to the Green and Blue lines had been restored, as had power along most of the Orange Line, barring the stretch between Forest Hills and Stony Brook.
According to the T, Green Line trains have also resumed service to Haymarket after they were briefly forced to bypass the station due to insufficient lighting.
