Maine sheriff’s deputy shot in the leg while responding to call for disturbance

A 42-year-old man is in police custody.

A Maine man was arrested early Wednesday and charged with shooting a sheriff’s deputy who was responding to the scene of a disturbance in Minot in the pre-dawn hours.

Corey Hamel, 42, of Minot is facing charges of aggravated attempted murder and arson, according to Maine State Police.

Police said Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a complaint of a disturbance at 1089 Woodman Hill Rd. around 4:05 a.m. At the scene, the deputies found the home was engulfed in flames. While the officers were escorting homeowners out of the residence, Hamel fired at them, police said.

Androscoggin Sergeant Randy Williams, 43, was struck by the gunfire and taken to Central Maine Medical Center where police said he was being treated for a wound to his upper right leg. He is expected to survive.
