This story was updated Monday night to include additional information about the victim.
The body of a man was recovered from the Charles River Monday afternoon, State Police said in a statement.
A search began at about 11:30 a.m. when witnesses reported seeing a man struggling in the water near Longfellow Bridge. Divers recovered the body at about 1:50 p.m., State Police Media Communications Officer Dave Procopio said in a statement.
The man was later identified as a 34-year-old person who, police said, was homeless.
“According to preliminary investigation by the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County and partner agencies, the victim appeared to jump from the Longfellow Bridge at approximately 11:30 a.m., then struggled to stay afloat and called for help before fully submerging,” Procopio said in the statement.
The search for the victim was conducted by State Police patrols, the State Police Dive Team and Marine Unit, Massachusetts Environmental Police, Boston Fire and Police Departments, Cambridge Fire Department, the Coast Guard, and Massport Fire Department, officials said.
The State’s Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County are conducting the investigation into the death, Procopio said. The death investigation is considered open pending the Medical Examiner’s determination of the victim’s cause and manner of death.
