Construction worker killed in Hanson after possible house foundation collapse

The house was having its basement waterproofed when the foundation attached to the house fell, pinning the man underneath, an initial investigation showed.

A construction worker was killed in Hanson after a single-family house partially collapsed on him Wednesday morning, officials said.

Hanson police responded to 50 Dwight St. at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of a man trapped at a construction site, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz’s office said in a statement.

Upon arrival, police and fire officials found a partial foundation collapse on one side of a single-family home and a man trapped underneath. The man, who was identified as 51-year-old Gerceir Osvaldo DeFaria, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The homeowner of the house was having the basement waterproofed, and a trench was being dug on the side of the house when the foundation attached to the house fell and pinned DeFaria underneath, an initial investigation showed.

“The team, along with Hanson police and Fire worked for over three hours before the victim’s body was removed from the site at approximately 2:49 p.m.,” the district attorney’s office said.

Hanson Police, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the death.
