A driver may be facing criminal charges after a Yarmouth traffic officer was struck by a car Tuesday morning while working a detail, officials said.
The officer was later identified as Sean Ryan, a 12-year veteran of the department, according to a statement by Yarmouth Police Department. The driver who reportedly struck him is a 74-year-old man from West Yarmouth.
The collision occurred on Route 28 near Rosemary Lane late Tuesday morning, officials said. The officer was in the roadway and wearing high-visibility clothing.
The driver remained on the scene and answered questions from investigators, police said.
Ryan is in “good” condition at Brigham and Women’s Hospital but is suffering from “multiple injuries,” an update to the statement read. He was alert when transported to the hospital, police said.
The crash is being investigated by the Yarmouth Police Department, Cape Cod Regional Crash Reconstruction Unit, and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Investigations. Charges are possible based on the outcome of the investigation, according to the statement.
