Security officials at Logan Airport on Saturday stopped a 86-year-old New Hampshire man from bringing a handgun, bullets, and a pocket knife aboard a flight.
According to the Transportation Security Administration, it is the first “firearm detection” of 2024 by Logan security.
A TSA officer detected the pistol, bullets, and blade in the man’s carry-on during a morning security screening, according to TSA. State police were alerted who confirmed that the unloaded .38 pistol was in the bag. The man told law enforcement, when questioned, that he originally intended to check the firearm.
A state police trooper took possession of the gun and the man was allowed to continue, TSA said.
“I strongly urge all gun owners to ensure they know where their firearm is before traveling to the airport,” Bob Allison, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Massachusetts, said in a statement.
Last year, 18 guns were found at Logan security checkpoints.
According to TSA, a first offense for carrying a loaded gun into a checkpoint can result in a $3,000 fine and go as high as $15,000 depending on associated circumstances.
